In the scorching first weeks of the year, when fans were effectively mocked for their feeble efforts, this USINA became home to 12 diverse artists—varied in their origins, backgrounds, identities, and expressions. These were artists with whom we, the curators, swapped tales of the twists and turns of artistic production, its ethical and political commitments, its challenges and possibilities. We shared our aspirations and asked about theirs.

For a month, USINA morphed into 12 lively spaces, buzzing with an ebb and flow of retreat and expansion. It blended the hours when each artist dived into their own work, focused on their processes, with those moments when they loosened up to sneak a peek at what the others were up to, attend talks, debate all sorts of topics, venture out to institutions and studios, or explore the old, new, and ultra-trendy pubs and restaurants that are shaking up the sleepy haze of Barra Funda. This is an old neighbourhood that, until recently, barely registered on the property market’s radar. That is, until the art spaces started popping up, brimming with captivating, spellbinding works—and with them, people curious to gauge the depth of our current moment.

The exhibition now filling the Usina Luis Maluf is just another chapter in this intense journey, aiming to give the public a taste of a small slice of the most striking poetics from Brazil’s young artistic scene. The stunning quality of the works—over 600 submissions—underscores the vital importance of initiatives like this. May these powerhouses, dedicated to radiating energy into our bodies and minds, endure and multiply.
