According to Vinicius Lopes, painting, literature, and investigation are all transformative materials and gestures that allow him to weave together real and mythological dialogues, reaching beyond the realm of folklore. In this condensed series, the works encapsulate a range of themes found in Brazilian folklore—transformation, cultural diversity, supernatural beings, and the interplay between nature and humanity. Elements and characters from Mário de Andrade’s Macunaíma, including the powerful Muiraquitã stone and the mischievous yet captivating anti-hero Macunaíma, are meticulously portrayed, inviting us to connect with their mythical presence and reflect on their lasting significance.
Just as Macunaíma himself is a complex figure embodying the essence of Brazil’s cultural diversity, this exhibition sets out to explore the multifaceted layers of Brazilian folklore and its influence on contemporary art. Drawing on the rich tapestry of characters, stories, and themes from the novel, the artist delves into the interaction between real and mythological dialogues, crafting a visual conversation that bridges past and present.
Each painting in this exhibition captures the spirit of Macunaíma, embodying the essence of transformation, cultural identity, and the intricate bond between humanity and the supernatural. Through a variety of techniques and styles—double exposure, surrealist elements, intricate details, and symbolic imagery—the works convey the depth and complexity of the novel’s themes.
Through his artistic interpretation, the exhibition brings the world of Macunaíma to life, inviting viewers to step into a realm where reality and myth coexist in harmony. By exploring the characters and tales of Brazilian folklore, the exhibition pays tribute not only to Mário de Andrade’s literary masterpiece but also celebrates the enduring power of folklore in shaping cultural heritage.
